Nicole and Robert sought a chic countryside wedding in Portugal that would pay homage to her Italian heritage and his Puerto Rican background. They fell in love with the atmosphere of São Lourenço de Barrocal, a sprawling 5-star hotel estate in the heart of the Alentejo countryside. The venue exudes Portuguese charm and was the ultimate setting for a peaceful but elevated alfresco experience.
For their wedding day, both Nicole and Robert wanted a Catholic service, so we chose what is considered the most beautiful historic chapel in Portugal, the Lois Church in Evora.
The most distinguishing feature of this church are the floor to ceiling 17th century blue and white azulejos. Before heading back to Barrocal, guests went to the ‘it’ spot for cocktails, which happened to be adjacent to the church; a highly curated bar and patio area, designed by Jacques Grange, for champagne and nibbles.
At the reception, guests were gifted with local delicacies of olive oil, apple gin, biscuits and a hand-painted welcome note. Decor and stationery were key elements that contributed to the old world vibe (with a dash of contemporary).
With a cocktail area set within the ancient sheep corral and decorated with high top tables with stripy linens, a colourful scene for cocktails and chats, decorated with an Italian antique terrine, large florals and panels from Nicole’s favourite fabric designers, Colefax and Fowler.
An exquisite touch was the plate wall, which consisted of patterned Portuguese, French and Italian porcelain pieces from the 18th and 19th century. This feature was an eye catching moment, adding embellishment and a feel of nostalgic heirloom pieces from home.
For the dinner, guests were guided to their seats as the sun set, at an elegant toile table with bespoke monogrammed napkins, silver plated cutlery, and pink Fleur-de-Lis plates, which simply made the prettiest wedding in an outdoor countryside setting. The mix and match feel of the flowers added to the layers of colours, and matched the fiery sunset tone of the sky. Guests enjoyed an alfresco dinner before dancing under the stars well past 4 in the morning.
